University City was recently highlighted in City Journal for its role as a rapidly growing global life sciences center. According to the article, in 2023, more than $710 million was spent on development projects in University City, and nearly $2 billion in research and development investments were received across University City institutions and companies. The article also recognizes Penn spinout Spark Therapeutics as a leading player in Philadelphia’s gene therapeutics sector.
