NIH Awards $6.9 Million to a Team of Scientists at Penn and UC San Diego to Advance Potential Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment

A team of scientists led by Kurt Brunden, PhD, Research Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Penn Medicine, and Carlo Ballatore, PhD, Professor, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at University of California San Diego, has been awarded a $6.9 million grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to develop a potential disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

The team discovered that a new compound, CNDR-51997, was effective in restoring brain health in mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease. The new grant will support further evaluation of CNDR-51997, including its safety, and the researchers hope to submit an Investigational New Drug (IND) application to the FDA by the end of the three-year grant period. CNDR-51997 was created via a drug discovery program jointly conducted by the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine and UC San Diego and is covered by patent applications available for licensing or partnership.
