Cesar de la Fuente’s AI Breakthroughs Could Help Predict the Next Pandemic

Cesar de la Fuente, PhD, Presidential Associate Professor in Penn Medicine, is using AI models to predict how future viruses or bacteria might bind to human cells, which has the potential to predict and even potentially prevent future pandemics. Recently, Dr. de la Fuente’s lab has been working on developing new antibiotics and exploring prehistoric proteins that could be repurposed to fight modern diseases like infections, cancer or neurological disorders. His team has demonstrated that AI can identify hundreds of thousands of potential preclinical treatments within hours, drastically reducing the time needed to respond to emerging health threats.
