The Y-Prize, jointly sponsored by PCI, the William and Phyllis Mack Institute for Innovation Management, Penn Engineering and Venture Lab, challenges students to develop business plans based on early-stage Penn Engineering technologies. This year, the CarboWells team, which includes Yash Iyer, Ronith Lahoti, Bhuranyu Mahajan, Yuki Qian and Ali Altan Yilmaz, won the $15,000 grand award for their carbon-capturing concrete oil well-plugging service addressing methane leaks from abandoned wells. Their idea is based on technology developed by Shu Yang, PhD, the Joseph Bordogna Professor and Chair of Materials Science and Engineering in Penn Engineering, and colleagues. Read more here.
