FloBio selected as a 2020 Falling Walls finalist for Science Start-Up Breakthrough of the Year
FloBio, an early stage medical diagnostic company announced that it was selected by Falling Walls Venture as a finalist for the Falling Walls Breakthrough of the Year in the category of Science Start-Ups.
FloBio is breaking the wall of diagnosing bleeding and thrombotic risk by pioneering a novel point-of-care diagnostic platform that enables clinicians to make evidence-based and cost-effective decisions for patients in emergency settings. The company’s novel approach employs the real-time analysis of flowing blood and direct measurement of blood function metrics, providing rapid sensitive detection of bleeding and thrombotic risk. Developing a portfolio of tests, the technology can eliminate uncertainty when diagnosing patients where time and actionable information are critical.
FloBio’s first product in development answers the demand for a Direct Oral Anticoagulant (DOAC) test that detects the presence, type, and level of anticoagulation. The company’s approach has the potential to improve decision making for managing at-risk patients while reducing unnecessary hospital and medication costs.
“We are thrilled to be selected as a finalist for Falling Walls Breakthrough of the Year” said Jerri Ann Thatcher, CEO of FloBio, “We are fortunate to be building upon the strong scientific evidence that has been generated by the Diamond Lab and are well positioned to advance FloBio’s research and development efforts, addressing the unmet needs for the rapid assessment of bleeding and thrombotic risk in emergency care patients.”
FloBio was founded by Scott L. Diamond, PhD, the Arthur E. Humphrey Professor at Penn Engineering and based on over 10 years of research at the University of Pennsylvania. More than 30 publications support scientific feasibility and proof of concept across a broad range of clinical and pharmacological situations where understanding bleeding and thrombotic risk is essential.
The Falling Walls conference received over 900 nominations from leading academic institutes in 106 countries. Across 10 fields of science, this event, which coincides with Berlin Science Week, asks the question—what are the next walls to fall in science and society? Finalists will be showcased in the Falling Walls video library, and dedicated juries will select the top 10 Breakthroughs of the Year on November 9.
FloBio is a start-up company originally founded at the Penn Center for Innovation and resides in The Pennovation Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
