A product based on Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) and the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) technology developed by Penn startup Neuralert Technologies was selected for TIME’s List of the Best Inventions of 2022. Neuralert’s lightweight, non-invasive wristband device is able to detect the onset of asymmetric movement (a hallmark indication of stroke) in as little as 15 minutes, and automatically alerts medical staff to spring into action. The FDA designated the wristband as a breakthrough device last year, and Neuralert is targeting its commercial release in 2023.
Neuralert was co-founded by former Penn Engineering professor James Weimer and Steven Messe, MD, Professor of Neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
