Elizabeth Featherman

Elizabeth (“Liz”) Lai Featherman is Associate Director, Legal Affairs at the Penn Center for Innovation, as well as an Associate General Counsel of the University of Pennsylvania.  

Ms. Featherman assists the Penn community in the licensing and commercialization of Penn’s technology and inventions and other legal issues that relate to research and technology transfer.  Prior to her role on the legal affairs team, Ms. Featherman drafted and negotiated sponsored research agreements as part of the Corporate Contracts group at PCI.  

Before joining Penn, Ms. Featherman was a partner at law firms in Philadelphia and Roseland, New Jersey, focusing on enforcement of intellectual property rights.  She was a partner at Cozen O’Connor and was an associate at Schnader in Philadelphia and K&L Gates in Boston.  Ms. Featherman also serves as the president of Asian American Women’s Coalition (AAWC), a non-profit organization dedicated to the concerns of Asian American Women in Philadelphia. Ms. Featherman served as a Leadership Academy Fellow at the Diversity Committee at the New Jersey State Bar Association in 2017-2018.

Ms. Featherman received her S.B. in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was elected to Pi Tau Sigma. She received her M.S. and pursued doctoral studies in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania. She revived Penn’s chapter of Pi Tau Sigma and served as the first chairman and president of the honors society after years of dormancy.  She received her law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center, now known as University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law.

Ms. Featherman is a member of the National Association of Colleges and University Attorneys (NACUA) and ChIPs. She is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

Tara Fromm

Tara is a Senior Patent Prosecution Paralegal for PCI working primarily with the Alliance team in addition to working with many other groups within PCI.   Tara has 20 years of experience working in patent law but also has a BA in political science and a master’s in criminal justice.  She enjoys art, music, reading, spending time with her daughter and taking care of her three dogs.

Melanie Roberts

Melanie is responsible for the administrative oversight of key aspects of the University’s IP compliance requirements. She manages the complex process of reporting intellectual property developments, disclosures, and compliance statuses to research sponsors. Melanie works closely with researchers, faculty and staff to provide guidance on IP compliance matters, ensuring that all innovations are adequately compliant with relevant laws and university policies. Melanie holds a BA in Psychology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and has over 14 years of experience in the field of technology transfer. In addition to her role at the University of Pennsylvania, Melanie is an active member of AUTM and serves on the AUTM University Compliance Course Planning Committee.

Dana Armstrong

Larbi Bricha

Larbi is responsible for overseeing PCI’s applications and technology initiatives. After earning a degree in Computer Engineering, he pursued a master’s degree in information technology management with a focus on Cybersecurity. Larbi has been actively involved in digital transformation as well as the implementation and customization of various applications and platforms. In his free time, he is an avid tennis player.

Helene Emanoff

Helene is a Senior Patent Prosecution Paralegal, supporting the filing and prosecution of Penn’s patent portfolio. She studied Communication with a concentration in Political Communication and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.  Helene has over 15 years of experience in the tech transfer space.  She likes travel, music, the Phillies, and a great pasta dish.

Michelle McSorley

Michelle manages the intellectual property, compliance, and operations teams which are responsible for new disclosure processing, patent portfolio management, federal and non-federal compliance, process and data management, and human resources. She has a B.S. in Business Administration with over 20 years of experience in technology transfer.

R. Carter Caldwell

As the Penn Medicine Co-Investment Program Director, Carter leads Penn Medicine’s investments in the cell therapy, gene therapy, mRNA, lipid nanoparticle, and connected health sectors. Utilizing multiple decades of experience as both an entrepreneur and an investor, he sources Penn Medicine faculty-driven investment opportunities, manages relationships with co-investors, completes due diligence, and supports the governance of the program companies. 

He was previously a Managing Director with Cross Atlantic Capital Partners, a venture capital firm with 4 funds and over $500 million under management and founded and managed two software companies, Quazant Technology and Acorn Systems, which was acquired by Ignite Technologies in July 2014. 

Carter holds an MBA from Columbia University and a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
